Blog of the Week (11/18/13)

Today
Today we learned about search engines. There are millions and millions and millions…. of search engines. If you want to search anything with something so that many options show up, you would do this: dino*
If you want to search something so something doesn’t show up, you a minus sign.: -montana
If you want to search something very specific, you do this: “dogs”
They also taught us how to do an advanced search.

Algorithm – How to Write Down Steps
Today in Techie Club, we learned about algorithm. Algorithm is a way to write down a set of instructions for programming a computer or just for a certain code to create an object. Today, to learn about algorithm, we were told to create an algorithm for how to assemble a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. We were put in 5 teams of 4 in each. To write an algorithm, we had to be very descriptive and specific. To help us with understanding it better, we were told to imagine it like we were programming a computer. If we were to miss a step while programming a computer, it function probably. We had to be very specific.
After each group was finished with their instructions, the volunteers used each instruction to try to create a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The volunteers did everything the instructions told them to, but in the end, the sandwich did not look like a sandwich. This is because we were not specific and detailed enough. After the demonstrations, we got to eat the rightfully made sandwiches.

Algorithms
Today in Techie Club we learned about algorithms. Algorithms are specific and detailed steps for a computer. When you are making algorithms it is important that you can be as specific as possible because if you don’t the computer will not know what to do, it is just like an alien from a different planet. If you don’t give the alien specific steps he won’t know what to do. Algorithms are just like programing.
We learned this by making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. We split up into 5 groups of 4. We had to make an Algorithm on “How To Make a PB&J sandwich. All of the other groups left out a bunch of important steps, but our group got all of the steps. In the end of the lesson we got to eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I had a lot of fun making algorithms and I learned that Algorithms are really important in life!
